Sleep Medicine

The Valor Health Sleep Laboratory offers a full-service sleep program that focuses on treatment and diagnosis of adult sleep disorders. A full evaluation will diagnose many common sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, and narcolepsy. We provide a comfortable and home-like environment, designed to decrease anxiety and to replicate similar sleeping patterns that you would experience at home. Our sleep lab is staffed by highly trained sleep technicians, and each study is reviewed by a board certified sleep medicine physician.

What is Sleep Lab?

The Sleep Disorders Laboratory specializes in sleep studies. An in-lab sleep study provides your doctor with the most complete evaluation of your sleep. It can help insure that you have the proper diagnosis and treatment for sleep disorder. The information gathered during the sleep study will be reviewed and evaluated by a sleep specialist. the medical director for the Sleep Lab is Dr. Patrick M. Plummer.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

The most common reason that people have sleep study is because their doctor thinks they may have Ostructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA. OSA occurs when the muscles of the throat relax and the airway collapses. Air cannot get into the lungs and the level of oxygen in the blood goes down. Often it is the bed partner who recognizes symptoms. Many people who have OSA have no complaints.

Symptoms can include;

  • Snoring
  • Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Headaches in the morning
  • Trouble concentrating, irritability
  • Restlessness during sleep
  • Sudden awakenings with a sensation of
  • Gasping or choking

What should I do the day of my sleep test?

  • Keep your regular routine as much as possible
  • Don’t nap
  • Don’t drink caffeine after lunch
  • Do not use hair sprays or gels since they can interfere with the sleep recording
  • Speak with your health care provider about whether or not to take your regular medication during the sleep study

What should I bring to the sleep lab?

You will go to the sleep lab sometime early in the evening. Bring comfortable pajamas and what you need for your nightly routine (toothbrush, toothpaste,etc.). Bring any medications directed by your health care provider.
