Behavioral health, which includes emotional and mental health, is essential for a healthier, happier, and more complete life. Unfortunately, behavioral health can be overlooked, and many people do not receive the care they need.
At Valor Health, our family medicine providers use a whole-person approach to connect you to the care you need—including behavioral health services. Providers work directly with the Valor Health behavioral health specialists; together, they customize a plan so you can get the right care at the right time.
Meet our Behavioral Health Specialists
Our behavioral health team comprises a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Both play crucial roles in mental health care, but training, scope of practice, and focus areas differ in ways that complement each other. PMHNPs are advanced practice registered nurses with specialized training in psychiatry, enabling them to diagnose mental health disorders, prescribe medications, and manage psychopharmacology for patients across the lifespan. The role of the PMHNP emphasizes both the medical and therapeutic aspects of treatment, often focusing on medication management and clinical assessment. In contrast, LCSWs hold a master’s degree in social work focusing on mental health and social services. While they cannot prescribe medications, LCSWs are trained extensively in therapeutic counseling, case management, and connecting patients with community resources. They provide individual, family, and group therapy, often focusing on psychosocial factors, coping strategies, and the social determinants of mental health. Together, PMHNPs and LCSWs can collaborate to offer patients a comprehensive approach to mental health care that addresses both the biological and psychosocial aspects of treatment.
Our team of specialists works closely with you and your primary care provider. Speak to your primary care provider or call our clinic for more information or to schedule an appointment. Provider referral may be required.

A Healthier, Happier Family
Studies show a parent’s declining mental health hurts their children. Getting the care you need, including learning coping strategies, tools to handle stress, help to understand your condition, or getting medication from your provider, can help your entire family live more balanced, healthier lives.
The healthy development of children and adolescents includes their mental health, too. If you think your child is struggling with anxiety or depression, or you have noticed other concerning signs, talk to their provider, who can guide your child to the right care.
