What is Sports Medicine?

Sports Medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on treating and preventing injuries related to sports and exercise. Our team includes surgeons, nurses, and an athletic trainer who works with various physically active patients, including sports athletes of all ages and industrial/occupational athletes.

What is an industrial/occupational athlete? These are the hard-working men and women who may need to treat or prevent injury received in their field of work.

To strengthen our relationship with the Gem Community, our sports medicine team has built a partnership with Emmett High School and other youth sports programs, providing athletic training care during home sporting events. Valor Health also provides yearly free sports physicals for student-athletes.

Meet Our Orthopedics Provider

Tim Neuschwander, MD

Tim Neuschwander, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and joint replacement. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Neuschwander earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and received his medical degree from the University of Southern California. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of California, San Diego, followed by an NIH research fellowship and a sports medicine fellowship at Santa Monica Orthopedic Group.

Prior to joining Valor Health, Dr. Neuschwander practiced in McCall for five years. His professional experience includes serving as assistant team physician for the LA Galaxy, volunteer team physician at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, and head orthopedic physician at Northern Michigan University.

Ryan Applone, DO

Dr. Ryan Applonie is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He practices general orthopedics with a special focus on complex shoulder and elbow conditions, including arthroscopy, joint replacement, and fracture care.

Dr. Applonie completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Michigan State University- McLaren Macomb Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, in 2018, where he served as chief resident during his final year. He went on to complete a shoulder and elbow fellowship at the University of Connecticut in 2019.

After returning to Idaho in 2019, Dr. Applonie became an independent orthopedic surgeon and partner at Capital Surgical Associates in Boise. In addition to his private practice, he provides call coverage with the Adult Orthopedic Trauma Group at St. Luke’s Boise and Meridian. Dr. Applonie is excited to work with Valor Health to provide expert orthopedic care in Emmett alongside other independent orthopedic surgeons from the Treasure Valley.

An Idaho native raised in Idaho Falls, Dr. Applonie enjoys spending time skiing, hiking, camping, and fishing. He is an avid soccer fan and continues to play competitively.

Ray Jensen, DO

Dr. Ray Jensen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon providing comprehensive musculoskeletal care for patients of all ages. He has specialized training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, with particular expertise in shoulder care, joint preservation, and joint replacement procedures.

Dr. Jensen earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Jensen is committed to delivering high-quality orthopedic care to patients across Idaho, helping individuals return to the activities they enjoy through personalized, evidence-based treatment.

Amy Chan, PA

Amy Chan, PA-C is a board-certified physician assistant specializing in orthopedic surgery. She assists in both the clinic and operating room, providing comprehensive care for patients with acute and chronic orthopedic conditions, including joint preservation, arthroscopic procedures, and total joint arthroplasty.

Amy earned her Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Idaho State University in 2017 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a minor in Educational Studies from the University of California, Irvine. Prior to PA school, she trained and worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in Los Angeles. She is licensed to practice in Idaho and holds national certification as a physician assistant.

Before joining Capital Surgical Associates, Amy gained experience in family medicine, general surgery, and emergency care. She spent four years practicing family medicine in rural Oregon, two years in general surgery, and most recently focused on orthopedic surgery in the Treasure Valley. She brings extensive procedural expertise and a patient-centered approach, emphasizing open communication, close follow-up, and empathy.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Amy has made the Boise area her home and enjoys the outdoors, community engagement, and supporting patients across Idaho with personalized, high-quality care. She is fluent in Cantonese, conversational in Mandarin, and intermediate in Spanish, allowing her to connect with a diverse patient population.
